|Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said Tavares will miss at least three weeks with an oblique strain the team captain suffered in a preseason game.
Analysis: Tavares would miss Toronto's first four games at a minimum under that timeline. The injury may give a fantasy boost to Alex Kerfoot, as he could he elevated into a top-six role to start the season.

Analysis: Wilson is progressing well from the surgery he underwent in May to fix a torn ACL and remains on target for an early December return.

|Couturier (back) is expected to miss the first two months of the season.
Analysis: Couturier appeared in just 29 games last season before undergoing back surgery last December and was hopeful to be healthy for the start of the 2022-23 season before injuring himself in preparation for training camp.

|Duclair (torn Achilles) is expected to miss the first few months of the season.
Analysis: Duclair underwent surgery on his Achilles in June and is reportedly not close to returning after notching a career-high 58 points in 2021-22 with 31 goals and 27 assists.

|Landeskog is expected to miss the first week of the season with a lower-body injury.
Analysis: Landeskog has not begun skating in preparation for the 2022-23 season after tallying 30 goals and 29 assists in 51 regular-season games and another 11 goals and 11 assists during Colorado's run to the Stanley Cup.

|Pacioretty (Achilles) is expected to be sidelined until mid-February.
Analysis: Pacioretty joined Carolina in the offseason after notching 19 goals and 18 assists in just 39 games for Vegas last season, but now likely won't see the ice until more than three months into the 2022-23 season.

|McAvoy (shoulder) is expected to be sidelined until early December.
Analysis: McAvoy underwent shoulder surgery in June after leading all Boston blue liners with a career-high 56 points in 2021-22, notching 10 goals and 46 assists.

|Marchand is starting the season on injured reserve after undergoing double hip surgery in late May.
Analysis: Marchand is expected to be out until at least early December. He led the Bruins last season with 80 points (32 goals, 38 assists) in 70 games and added a team-best 11 points in Boston's opening-round playoff loss to Carolina in seven games.

|Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said news about Price's knee is ''discouraging'' and that the star goaltender may not play this season.
Analysis: Hughes said it was unlikely that Price would be able to return without first undergoing surgery, and that rehab alone likely wouldn't be enough. After helping the Canadiens reach the Stanley Cup final in 2021, Price suffered numerous setbacks in returning to the game. He underwent knee surgery last summer and sought help from the NHLPA/NHL player assistance program in October for substance abuse.
